ASSESSMENT OF BIOAVAILABILITY OF HEAVY METALS AFTER VERMICOMPOSTING IN THE PRESENCE OF ELECTRONIC WASTE Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Damasceno,Odilaine Inácio de Carvalho; Reis,César; Reis,Efraim Lázaro; Bellato,Carlos Roberto; Fidêncio,Paulo Henrique.
ABSTRACT Heavy metals contained in electronic waste, if discarded improperly, can become bioavailable after vermicomposting, posing a risk to the environment. Small-scale vermicomposting experiments were carried out with printed circuit boards (PCBs) to investigate the migration of heavy metals (Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni, and Sn) to the final compost, as well as the mobility and bioavailability of these metals. High total levels of Pb, Sn and Cu in samples of manure with electronic waste (MEW) and vegetables with electronic waste (VEW) were detected. Based on the initial metal levels in the PCBs and their concentration in the resulting compost, the order of migration of these metals to the MEW and VEW samples was Sn (23.1 %)>Pb (18.4 %)>Ni (4.63 %)>Zn (0.46...

Changes in the sediment trace metal contamination after the commissioning of a municipal wastewater treatment plant in the Souss estuary (South Morocco) ArchiMer
Moukrim, A; Chiffoleau, Jean-francois; Cheggour, M; Burgeot, Thierry.
Monthly samples of sediment were collected from the Souss estuary, to determine the changes which have occurred in the concentrations of ten metals between 2001 when the low estuary was receiving the wastewaters from Agadir city and 2003 after stopping the sewage dumping. The annual contents of Cu, Fe, Zn (in 2001) and those of Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn (in 2003) showed significant correlations with those of Al, indicating that fluctuations of their concentrations were only due to those of the aluminosilicate fraction of the clayey sediment. After normalization of these metallic concentrations in relation to those of Al, the contents of the different metals showed insignificant correlations between both years, except for Zn which significantly dropped...

Determining sedimentary material sources in a Brazilian urban lake using Zn stable isotope compositions of bottom sediments: a preliminary study ArchiMer
Ferreira Araujo, Daniel; Boaventura, Geraldo; Mulholland, Daniel; Garnier, Jeremie; Machado, Wilson; Babinski, Marly; Dantas, Elton.
Zinc isotopes ratios provide qualitative and quantitative information about contributions from different Zn sources in the environment. Here we present the results of a preliminary study to identify the main sources controlling Zn isotope signatures of sediments from Lake Paranoá (Brazil), an urban water reservoir. The Zn isotope ratios were measured by MC-ICP-MS and expressed as δ66/64Zn notation relative to the JMC 3-0749-L solution. The studied sediments showed a narrow isotopic range (+0.00 to +0.13 ‰; n = 10) similar to that reported for intensely weathered soils worldwide (from -0.4 to +0.2‰). The geoaccumulation index (Igeo) also suggests low or negligible influence of Zn anthropogenic source. This research provides a baseline assessment of the Zn...

DNA damage in the kidney tissue cells of the fish Rhamdia quelen after trophic contamination with aluminum sulfate Genet. Mol. Biol.
Klingelfus,Tatiane; Costa,Paula Moiana da; Scherer,Marcos; Cestari,Marta Margarete.
Abstract Even though aluminum is the third most common element present in the earth's crust, information regarding its toxicity remains scarce. It is known that in certain cases, aluminum is neurotoxic, but its effect in other tissues is unknown. The aim of this work was to analyze the genotoxic potential of aluminum sulfate in kidney tissue of the fish Rhamdia quelen after trophic contamination for 60 days. Sixty four fish were subdivided into the following groups: negative control, 5 mg, 50 mg and 500 mg of aluminum sulfate per kg of fish. Samples of the posterior kidney were taken and prepared to obtain mitotic metaphase, as well as the comet assay. The three types of chromosomal abnormalities (CA) found were categorized as chromatid breaks,...

Influence of accumulation of heaps of steel slag on the environment: determination of heavy metals content in the soils Anais da ABC (AABC)
Garcia-Guinea,Javier; Correcher,Virgilio; Recio-Vazquez,Lorena; Crespo-Feo,Elena; Gonzalez-Martin,Rafael; Tormo,Laura.
The presence of high level of heavy metals involves a human healthy risk that could induce chronic diseases. This work reports on the metal contamination due to heaps of steel-slag accumulated during more than 40 years in allotments and industrial areas in the southern part of Madrid (Spain). Several slag and soil samples were collected in an area of 10 km² and characterized by different conventional (XRD and XRF) and no so common methods (ESEM, thermoluminescence and EDS-WDS). The analysis reveal the presence of: (i) important amounts of Fe (43%), Mg (26%), Cr (1.1%), Mn (4.6%), S (6.5%) in the form of Fe-rich slag phases (wustite, magnetite...), Si and Ca-rich phases (larnite, ghelenite...), Cr (chromite), Mn (bustamite) and graphite, (ii) traces of some...

Retrospective study of metal contamination time trends in the French part of the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Boutier, Bernard; Quintin, Jean-yves; Rozuel, Emmanuelle; Auger, Dominique; Bretaudeau-sanjuan, Jane.
Two cores were sampled in the Bay of Biscay: one a few miles off the Gironde estuary (pointe de la Coubre), the other near the Spanish border (Capbreton canyon) to study past variations in sediment contamination. Radiochronology (210Pb, 137Cs) and total metal determinations by ICP-MS allowed the study of time trends for metal concentrations in sediment. Off the Gironde, during the time interval recorded by the core (1958–1999), all metal concentrations remained less than OSPAR background values. Some variations occurred along the Cd and Zn profiles, which may correspond to a very attenuated signal from the Gironde outputs. This suggests that this area was not submitted to any significant anthropogenic input of metals between 1958 and 1999. In the canyon of...

Trace metals assessment in water, sediment, mussel and seagrass species - Validation of the use of Posidonia oceanica as a metal biomonitor ArchiMer
Lafabrie, Céline; Pergent, G; Kantin, Roger; Pergent Martini, C; Gonzalez, Jean-louis.
The accumulation of trace metals (Cd, Co, Cr, Hg, Ni and Pb) was measured in water, sediment, the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis and the seagrass Posidonia oceanica. Samples were collected in three locations of the north-western Mediterranean (Canari, Livorno and Porto-Torres) which present different levels and sources of human impact. Analyses in the different compartments (water, sediment, M. galloprovincialis and P. oceanica) have allowed to identify Canari as the most Cd, Co, Cr and Ni contaminated site; Livorno as the most Hg contaminated and Porto-Torres as the most Pb contaminated. Furthermore, for the first time, metal concentrations found in P. oceanica have been compared with those found in the water column, in the sediment and in the...

Utilisation de Posidonia oceanica (L.) Delile comme bio-indicateur de la contamination métallique ArchiMer
Lafabrie, Céline.
The coastal zone of the continental shelf contains a high ecological richness. However, this zone is very fragile towards xenobiotics ; the pollution of this environment can be damaging to the structure of the biocenoses and to the productivity of the ecosystems. Metals, contrarily to numerous contaminants, are normal constituents of the environment at a trace level, but are all toxic above a certain threshold. At the end of the 1970s, several researchers proposed the use of organisms to evaluate the quality of the marine environment ; it is in this context that the bio-indicator concept arises. The seagrass Posidonia oceanica (L.) Delile, endemic of the Mediterranean Sea, has been the subject of several works proposing to use this species to determine the...

Zinc isotopes as tracers of anthropogenic sources and biogeochemical processes in contaminated mangroves ArchiMer
Ferreira Araujo, Daniel; Machado, Wilson; Weiss, Dominik; Mulholland, Daniel S.; Garnier, Jeremie; Souto-oliveira, Carlos E.; Babinski, Marly.
Recent work has shown that variations in zinc (Zn) isotope ratios enable us to identify contamination sources in the terrestrial environment and uptake processes in higher plants. Here in this study, we demonstrate that this also holds true for mangrove forests, which play an important role in the biogeochemical cycling of metals in tropical coastal ecosystems and that are seriously threatened by anthropogenic pollution. To this end, we determined zinc concentration and isotope composition (expressed using the δ66Zn notation relative to the JMC 3-0749-L standard) in sediments and tree leaves collected from a mangrove close to Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. The δ66ZnJMC values of sediments vary between +0.36 and + 0.84‰ and fall on a mixing line between detrital...
